Gas Injection Used for Magnesium Die Casting

Gas Injection Used for Magnesium Die Casting

It is reported that the researchers in Aalen University, Germany use gas injection in hot chamber die casting for manufacturing magnesium die casting with hollow structure.

Light materials used for car body structure can meet the requirements of energy conservation and emission reduction of auto, reducing emission of carbon dioxide and improving efficiency of fuels. Magnesium is ideal light metal materials. High pressure die casting provides possibility to magnesium or aluminum for manufacturing light structural components, realizing mass production and moderate costs. High pressure die casting is one of the most financial die casting technologies. High pressure die casting has already shown its excellent mechanical properties and thin thickness. In automobile industry, cab body using more die castings can reduce the total weight of auto. Magnesium structure is more suitable for taking place of traditional aluminum and steel structure. The density of aluminum is 1.738g/cm3, which is the lightest metal.

Gas injection is a kind of innovative methods producing three dimensional hollow structure, which is used for plastic processing originally. Gas injection can form a cavity inside parts. Then, high pressure enter, making static liquid magnesium enter into overflow cavity in solidified parts. The technology realizes forming cavity in die casting.

Researchers also developed particular operational software and gas insulating device used for processing.
