On September 13, 2022, local time, Alcoa Corporation (NYSE: AA) announced innovations in the development and deployment of materials designed to further strengthen its position as a supplier of advanced aluminum alloys.
According to the news released by Alcoa, at the 2022 International Selection of Quality Castings held by the North American Die Casting Association (NADCA) in Lexington this week, its high-performance alloy C611 EZCast™ without heat treatment was applied to the die casting of a new energy vehicle in China won the Best Aluminum Alloy Structural Parts Award. The C611 EZCast™ alloy has received recognition in the structural die casting field for its use in
integrated die casting, which reduces manufacturing costs and obtains greater efficiency and economics.
"Aluminum is the preferred material for low carbon in the future, and alloy innovations such as A210 ExtruStrong™ and C611 EZCast™ are keys to the solution, offering a very positive impact," said Kelly Thomas, the executive vice president and chief commercial officer of Alcoa. The automotive industry and industrial customers aim to reduce costs and achieve their sustainability goals. Continuing to innovate new aluminum alloy technologies for sustainable applications in areas such as electric vehicles aligns with our vision to reshape the aluminum industry for a sustainable future.
C611 EZCast™ facilitating mass production of large castings for electric vehicle manufacturer named NIO
NIO recently announced the successful application of C611 EZCast™ alloy in integrated die castings. As a new energy vehicle company with professional teams all over the world to support its all-electric vehicle production line, NIO has conducted comprehensive cooperation and tested with Alcoa's partner in China, Shuaiyichi New Materials Group Co., Ltd., proving the efficient utilization of the C611 EZCast™ alloy, and increasing productivity and efficiency while ensuring reliability and safety.
"Alcoa's C611 alloy is an important step in the future of NIO's development of casting," said Gary Hughes, R&D director at NIO. "We have significantly reduced energy consumption and carbon emissions by using C611."
C611 EZCast™ alloy has been used to manufacture components such as front rails, rear rails and floor frames. Once the alloy is formed, it does not need to go through a complex heat treatment process like traditional structural parts, and only needs to go through the normal painting process that is part of each automaker's assembly line process to achieve final properties. Eliminating heat treatment, there are multiple benefits such as saving energy, reducing carbon dioxide emissions and the complexity of the vehicle manufacturing process.
In March 2020, Alcoa authorized a company to exclusively produce and sell C611 EZCast™ alloys in China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan and other Asian countries and regions. Alcoa's alloys have met the NIO's strict requirements for related casting parts and have brought a 20% weight reduction for rear floor use parts.
